Pepino Melon

Latin Name: Solanum muricatum

Other Names: Pepino melon, pepino dulce, melon pear

Type: Subshrub

Native to: Andes mountains

Fruit: The fruit is 2-5" long and shaped like an egg. It is a cream color with purple streaks.

The pepino is related to fruits like the tomato, pepper, potato, and tamarillo.

Size: The pepino grows 4-6' tall.

Hardiness: Zones 9-11

Propagation: Seeds, cuttings

Uses: Pepino is usually eaten fresh. It has a taste similar to melons, which is why they can be called pepino melon.
